Can particle physics be explained with an olive salad, and plant research with a vegetable stew? I say: Yes, absolutely!
I believe that the best way to engage people with research topics is to meet them where they are in their everyday lives—and what could be better for that than food? Even complex scientific topics can be made appealing through delicious dishes. Based on this idea, I have since developed two formats: the science cooking show Aglio et al. on YouTube, which was created as part of my fellowship at MIP.labor, and the event format WissensDinner, where researchers and explain scientific content in easily digestible nuggets of knowledge using a specially designed menu.
WissensDinner
On November 21, 2025, the first WissensDinner featuring plant researcher, science communicator, and author Dr. David Spencer took place at the Kult9 community center in Munich. He presented fascinating facts from the field of plant research. The plant-based three-course meal was prepared by chef Clarissa Juse, who also explained the concept of the planetary health diet at the event. I organized the event together with science communicator Viktoria Ganß, with financial support from the Munich Science Communication Lab.

Aglio et al.
What do marinated olives have to do with our universe, and baked tomatoes with an underground laboratory in Italy? At the German science cooking show Aglio et al., we bring research out of the lab and into the kitchen, transforming abstract science into something understandable and delicious!
In the first episode of “Aglio et al.,” I talk with physicist Florian Henkes about one of the greatest mysteries in modern science: the existence of our universe. Together, we recreate Florian’s research in the kitchen while cooking two tasty dishes.
This format and pilot video were created as part of my fellowship at MIP.labor, a think tank for science journalism focused on mathematics, computer science, and physics. MIP.labor is based at Freie Universität Berlin and is supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
